1. Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB)
Contact RNIB and shop online for their clocks/watches, Braille equipment, kitchen gadgets, gardening tools, books and many more products. Find out about the latest campaigns. RNIB also provides advice on the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), and related issues.
2. Action for Blind People
Action for Blind People gives advice on benefits, housing, employment including self-employment, training in IT, leisure activities etc. They also run hotels throughout the UK and operate four mobile resource units similar to SVAB’s MERV.
3. Royal Blind Society
The Royal Blind Society’s website contains information about the Society’s hotels, its work and applications for grants.
4. Guide Dogs for the Blind
Guide Dogs for the Blind Association provides and trains guide dogs and other services including rehabilitation and mobility training. The website includes information about social events, the Association’s national raffle and news.
5. Cobolt Products
Cobolt supplies a wide range of products designed for people with visual impairment including talking daily living gadgets such as microwaves and bathroom scales.
This website provides information about audio described theatre performances throughout the UK.
7. Talking Newspapers
Information about the Talking Newspapers Association (including the local Talking Newspapers that serve Shropshire, the Oswestry area, and Telford and Wrekin) as well as about national and regional newspapers and magazines, can be found on these websites. The first one takes you straight to the West Shropshire Talking Newspaper website. The second one takes you to the national Talking Newspaper website.
8. British Wireless for the Blind Fund
The British Wireless for the Blind Fund was founded in 1928. SVAB acts as the Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin agent for this charity. The Fund provides radios and audio sets for registered blind or registered partially sighted people who don’t have sets, and are unable to buy one. For further information click on the link below:
9. Shropshire Council
Shropshire Council’s website contains a host of information about many aspects of services provided in the county including local clubs and societies.
(a) Shropshire Council’s Sensory Impairment Service:
Information about the services for sensory impairment can be obtained by telephoning 01743 277698 or e-mailing JIT@shropshire.gov.uk or by clicking on the link below.
(b) Shropshire Council and Borough of Telford & Wrekin Joint Service for Children and Young People with sensory impairment – the Sensory Inclusion Service (SIS).
Information about Education Support Services for children and young people with sensory impairment, and their families and schools, that are provided by jointly by Shropshire Council and the Borough of Telford and Wrekin can be obtained by telephoning 01952 385 245, or clicking on the link below:
(c) Vision Technology and Training Shropshire.
This service is provided at Helena Lane Centre, 20 Hamlet Road, Ludlow, SY8 2NP and offers specialised training in the use of Information Technology and computers for blind and visually impaired users. 17. Annual SEE & HEAR EXHIBITION.
This event is held each May in Sundorne Sports Village. Next year (2013) it will be on Wednesday 15th May. There will be approximately 60 stands representing services and products to do with living with and managing sensory impairment. You will find a mine of information about developments in this field. Don't miss out. Free buses run from Shrewsbury train station throughout the day. The event opens at 10am.
